MCS HEAD LICE POLICY

As our school is governed by the Hudson Headwaters Health Network for any medical situation or procedure, we follow the school head lice policy adopted by them.

This policy reads as follows:

With each school year, the problem with head lice re-appears.  The following steps should be taken when head lice or nits are identified:

  1. Notify parents of lice condition and inform them of the following:
  2. The child must receive treatment before they can be re-admitted to school.
  3. Nits must be removed to prevent re-infection and contagious risk.
  4. Family members should be checked at home for hair conditions.  Look for nits, especially at the nape of the neck and behind the ears.
  5. The home environment should be cleaned:  towels, linens, combs, brushes, clothing, hats, upholstery, mattresses, pillows, and stuffed animals.  You may use hot water for washables.  Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes, vacuum rugs, upholstery, and stuffed animals.
  6. Parents should be advised to contact their MD for advice and treatment.
  7. HHHN families may call for instructions and treatment.
  8. Non-HHHN children may have the diagnosis confirmed at the local health center and the treatment prescribed.  There will be an appropriate office fee charged for this service.
  9. If parents receive 3 notifications in 2 months or less:
  10. A medical note indicating the type of treatment will be required for return to school.
  11. A Public Health referral should be initiated.
