Minerva Central School Cell Phone Policy – “Off and Away”
Minerva Central School has adopted a strict “Off and Away” policy regarding student cell phones and personal electronic devices (PEDs) during the school day. The policy is designed to reduce distractions, protect student mental health, and foster a more focused and respectful learning environment.
Students in grades PK–6 must keep all devices off and stored securely with their classroom teacher or in a locker. Students in grades 7–12 are required to place their devices in a secure lockbox in Room 208 upon arrival and may retrieve them at the end of the day. Personal devices are not permitted during class time, lunch, detention, in-school suspension, or disciplinary meetings.
Any inappropriate use—including taking unauthorized photos/videos, cheating, or harassment—will result in disciplinary action. Consequences escalate with each offense, up to loss of privileges and required parent meetings. Exceptions may be made for medical needs, translation support, or family caregiving responsibilities (with documentation and approval).
Parents who need to contact students during the day should call the main office or use approved communication tools. Classrooms are equipped for emergency calls.
This policy reflects our commitment to safety, equity, and the academic success of all students.
