First Grade News

We are off to a great start to the year in first grade. The first graders all came in with bright, smiling faces ready to take on the new school year. Each one of them has been working very hard with every task that is thrown at them. In ELA, we have been working on our reading comprehension with Stellaluna and Frog and Toad. They have also had opportunities to work on their sentences and try their hardest to spell tricky words. We talk a lot about how they just have to try and I’ll be proud. Mistakes help us learn! In math, we have been working on addition and subtraction strategies.

Our first unit in science is all about animals. We learned about how some animals can camouflage themselves so they can blend in with their environments in order to survive. Moths were one of the many animals we learned about. We learned they can blend in with different trees! Students had the opportunity to color their own month to blend in with something in the classroom. They had so much fun with it and loved to show it off and make others search for their moth.

Below is a picture from our most recent field trip to the pumpkin patch.  We had so much fun walking around picking out our pumpkins! The donuts and apple juice were a yummy treat too! Thank you to It’s About Thyme for having us!!
