Learning Together in Fifth Grade

5th Grade News

The fifth grade has had a great start to the school year! Students quickly adjusted to classroom routines and expectations, and we spent time learning about the importance of having a growth mindset. With a growth mindset, we can overcome challenges, practice positive self-talk, and focus on progress over perfection.
One exciting change to the 5th grade schedule is that students switch classes for ELA. Mrs. Ordway is the 5th grade ELA teacher, and Mrs. Gosselin teaches 5th grade math, science, and social studies. This helps students to create a bridge between their elementary years and their high school experiences. We work on responsibility for materials, how to manage time, and how to navigate routines and expectations in different classrooms.
We recently began a unit of study on Solomon Northup. Students learned that Solomon was the son of freed slaves and he was born in Minerva. We discussed the major events of Solomon’s life, including being stolen into slavery. We were lucky to have Mrs. Stone visit our classroom to share a presentation that she created for the Minerva Historical Society. We were also lucky to have the opportunity to take a field trip to see the monument for Solomon Northup, called "Hope Out of Darkness",  in Saratoga Springs. At the monument, we met a gentleman who did an excellent job as a Solomon Northup reenactor. He shared Solomon’s stories with the students and explained even more details of Solomon’s life. Finally, our day concluded at the Old Fort House Museum in Fort Edward. When the museum was a boarding house, Solomon lived there with his wife and young family. We were able to stand in the room that is believed to be the Northup’s room. It was a great day full of many valuable experiences!
