    Summary of New Interim Guidance

    Dear Minerva Central School Families,

It has been wonderful seeing our students return to school this past week. Although we continue to face unprecedented challenges, our district is committed to ensuring an engaging, rewarding, and educational experience for all students in 2022. The following is important COVID health and safety information based on the most recent guidance from Essex County, the NYSDOH, and the
    CDC.

As of January 7th, 2022, Essex County Health Services began implementing New York’s updated guidance for isolation and quarantine in COVID-19 cases. Isolation relates to behavior after a confirmed infection. Quarantine refers to the time following exposure to the virus or close contact with someone known to have COVID-19. Both updates come as the Omicron variant continues to spread throughout the U.S. and reflects the current science on when and for how long a person is maximally infectious.

ISOLATION – After testing positive for COVID, the isolation period is now 5 days if you have no symptoms or no fever for at least 72 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.  You must then continue to wear a mask for 5 additional days. Individuals who are moderate to severely immunocompromised should continue to follow standard (i.e., not shortened) isolation guidance.
Ending Isolation and Precautions for People with COVID-19: Interim Guidance

QUARANTINE – The CDC updated the recommended quarantine period for those exposed to COVID-19. For people who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second mRNA dose (or more than 2 months after the J&J vaccine) and not yet boosted, CDC now recommends quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days. Fully vaccinated individuals who do not display any symptoms after exposure continues to be exempt from quarantine.

Essex County emphasizes that wearing masks is still important given the community’s surge in cases and the fact that the Omicron variant is present in our community.

As always, if your child is not feeling well, please keep them home until they feel better and contact your child's school nurse. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in keeping our school community healthy.

    Sincerely,
    Kyle H. McFarland
    Superintendent

What to do if your child tests positive:

If your child has taken a home rapid test and has tested positive, please contact Essex County Public Health at (518) 873-3500, contact the school nurse, and input your test results online at the Essex County Isolation and Quarantine page.

If you need an isolation order quickly, you may request one from the Essex County Isolation and Quarantine page You can review the isolation guidelines and complete an Isolation Request form to receive (via e-mail) an Order of Isolation from ECHD.

    Tested positive and symptomatic:

    • Isolate for five (5) days, where day zero (0) is the day of first symptoms
    • After the five days and symptoms are resolving (fever-free for 72 hours, no or only slight dry cough, no runny nose), isolation ends and the individual must wear a well-fitting mask while around others for an additional five days.
    • Upon returning to school, when eating or drinking, individuals must be 6 feet apart from others for the remaining required time period.
    • If a positive individual is symptomatic beyond the five-day quarantine, they should stay home from school until their symptoms are resolved (fever-free for 72 hours, no or only slight dry cough, no runny nose).

    Positive and asymptomatic:

    •  Isolate for five (5) days, where day zero (0) is the day of collection of the first positive specimen (from a rapid or PCR test).
    • After the initial five days, isolation ends and the individual should wear a well-fitting mask while around others for an additional five days.
    • Upon returning to school, when eating or drinking, individuals should be 6 feet apart from others for the remaining required time period
    • Quarantine recommendations: The New York State Department of Health makes the following quarantine recommendations:
    • If a person who had contact with someone with COVID-19 is not fully vaccinated or is fully vaccinated and eligible for a booster but not yet boosted, requirements include quarantine for five (5) days and wearing of a well-fitting mask while around others for an additional five days.
    • If a person who has contact with someone with COVID-19 is fully vaccinated and boosted (with the booster at least two weeks before the first date of exposure) or not yet eligible for a booster, no quarantine is required but these individuals should wear a well-fitting mask while around others for 10 days after the last date of exposure.

    Fully vaccinated status

The current and most recent NYSDOH guidelines do require a booster dose, if eligible, to be considered exempt from quarantine and fully vaccinated. At the Essex County Department of Health level, they are following NYSDOH guidance. Therefore, effective immediately this means that a booster dose is required (if the individual is eligible) to be considered fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

    • Fully vaccinated and eligible for booster and boosted = no quarantine
    • Fully vaccinated and eligible for a booster but not boosted = quarantine
    • Fully vaccinated but not medically eligible for booster = no quarantine

If you have not already received a booster shot, the CDC now recommends booster shots for those aged
12 and older. CDC Informational Page

    Test results

If your child is awaiting PCR test results, please contact your child’s school nurse and be ready to demonstrate proof of testing. If your child’s PCR results come back positive, please send the school nurse the isolation period papers provided by Essex County Public Health, which include specific dates of isolation issued by the county.
