Minerva Bicentennial Celebration
March 17, 2017 marked a very special date in Minerva’s history as the town celebrated its 200th anniversary, and Minerva Central School was delighted to serve as host for the town’s main event. It was an event filled evening which began with a delicious St. Patrick’s Day dinner, sponsored by Ms. Katy Smith and the MCS Class of 2018. Following dinner and an announcement from Brent Tucker the Town Crier, Minerva Town Supervisor Stephen McNally read his Bicentennial Proclamation along with a letter from Governor Andrew Cuomo. Joe Provoncha, Essex County Clerk, addressed the crowd by reading several letters from various Essex County leaders and departments and shared a few of his childhood memories involving Minerva. Following the proclamation and reading of letters, the nearly full gymnasium enjoyed a few songs performed by the North Country Singers, led by Mrs. Denise Conti. Finishing out the evening celebration was an opportunity to visit students in grades 4th, 5th and 6th, who presented their research projects on several of Minerva’s historical people and places. An event like this takes a lot of time, effort and collaboration. Nancy Shaw and Anne Dunkley, Co-Chairs of the Minerva Bicentennial Committee, were supported by dozens of people who made the evening such a success. Thank you to all who contributed to this wonderful event.
Two of our long-serving teachers have announced their retirement. Mrs. Perryman, Minerva Central School’s Science Teacher for the past forty-eight years, has announced her retirement effective at the end of March. Mrs. Galusha, Minerva Central School’s Special Education Teacher is ending her thirty-seven year teaching career at MCS in June. As is customary, we will plan to have a school assembly before the end of the school year to honor Mrs. Perryman and Mrs. Galusha. Since both of these teachers have served the school for multiple generations, we will be sure to spread the word when the event is scheduled in case there are members of the school community, past or present, who would like to attend.
