Hello! My name is Amy Scott, and I am the 2nd-grade teacher here at Minerva. This is my third year teaching here, and I absolutely love it at Minerva Central School! I live in Saratoga Springs with my husband of 20 years, and we have five children. My oldest child graduated here at Minerva last year (see picture below), and I currently have two high school students, one middle schooler and one 2nd grader, all within the Saratoga Springs School district.
Before teaching here, I filled several maternity and medical leaves for three years at many surrounding schools in the area. These schools include North Warren, Amsterdam, Fort Ann, and several elementary schools within the Saratoga Springs School district. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Liberty University and then got married and started growing our family. Before teaching, I poured myself into being a mom. I was a stay-at-home mom for almost 15 years before pursuing teaching within the public school system. I took care of the kids during the day, and then at night, I went on to get my Master’s degree in teaching and became certified to teach Birth – 6th grade from SUNY Plattsburgh. I also obtained my second Master’s degree in Literacy (K-12) from Saint Rose.
Outside of school, I am mainly focused on being a mom. Having five kiddos means being an Uber for all of their work, athletic and extracurricular activities. It’s a joy I signed up for over 18 years ago! We love to spend time outside and doing outdoor activities. One of our favorite things to do is to go trail riding with our four-wheelers. On the weekends, we go to church, and the kids enjoy attending youth group. We can also be found hiking up local mountains or swimming at Moreau State Park. We enjoy playing board games, hanging out with friends, and going to the Great Escape. My husband is from the D.C. area, so we are faithful Washington Football Team fans (even though they haven’t had a winning season for over 20 years!). My husband and I usually don’t miss watching a game together. I also love to play volleyball and play every chance I get. We have a family tradition of watching the show Survivor. We haven’t missed an episode in over 20 years, and we look forward to watching it together as a family. I also now have the pleasure of teaching another child to drive, although I think it may be more stressful than most things I have experienced in my life. A few fun facts about me: I hate seafood, I am a huge coffee drinker, I lead a women’s Bible Study, yellow is my favorite color, my favorite flower is a Sunflower, I once got to swim with dolphins, I love hanging out with my kids, and I just bought a timeshare so we can start traveling more! ☺
Being a mom is not a responsibility I take lightly. And having five kids, I believe, helps me to be a better teacher. I want to treat my students the way that I want my kids to be treated at school. I want them to be heard, to seek to be understood, to be spoken to kindly, and I want someone to see the reason behind their behavior (and not just their behavior).
I am grateful to have found Minerva Central School. I love teaching in a smaller school where I can meet with students one on one several times a week due to smaller classroom sizes. This is invaluable to me. This is why I don’t mind having a bit of a commute to work every day. Of course, I also work with great colleagues, and I see a passion for student connection and learning within our school. I appreciate being a part of this community and love watching the kiddos learn and grow every day. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else!
