    Well, "a desk" is a noun, and all nouns have gender in Spanish.  They are either masculine or feminine.

    The gender of nouns doesn't usually have anything to do with the difference male and female in a biological sense.

    So then, how do you determine the gender of nouns in Spanish?

    Conjugating a verb? What is that all about?
    We do it in every sentence we say. You just don't realize that.
    This is done to every verb, in every complete sentence, you will ever say in Spanish.
